Our Montessori Method

Follow the Child is built around the Montessori method. This educational philosophy, combined with our commitment to fostering a creative and inclusive community, guides our success.

What is the Montessori method?

The Montessori method is an educational approach that encourages children to pursue their natural interests so they develop the foundation of a lifetime of learning, which includes curiosity, persistence, initiative, order, the habit of concentration, and a positive attitude toward school.

It accomplishes this by giving children the freedom to choose activities within a carefully prepared learning environment. In the Montessori classroom, children navigate a child-sized world that entices them to explore, choose an activity, and proceed with it at their own pace. By allowing them to discover the world around them and satisfy their natural curiosity, children are given a sense of security, purpose, and confidence.

The Montessori method was originally developed in 1897 by Dr. Maria Montessori based upon her work with children and insight on how they interacted with their surroundings. It has since spread to thousands of schools around the world.

Our Montessori Philosophy

We carry out the Montessori method throughout our classrooms and community. This involves a close collaboration between students, teachers, administration, and parents that includes:

  • Teachers dedicated to crafting environments that encourage exploration, curiosity, and learning, and to helping children navigate through them successfully.

  • Mixed-age classrooms and activities that promote socialization and collaboration.

  • A variety of activities beyond the classroom that involve the entire range of children’s sensory experiences and that keep them engaged.

  • At least 15 hours of parental involvement per academic year, either directly inside the classroom or in social events, work days, and other opportunities.

  • A consistent partnership between teachers and parents so that everyone understands how best to serve the whole child.
