The Upper Elementary class can be seen as the culmination of FCM's Montessori program, for it is here that students begin to actualize their learning into experiences that take them beyond the classroom and out into the community.

Upper Elementary students work to refine the skills they will need for effective written and oral communication. They also expand their skills in arithmetic and geometry, often moving into pre-algebraic work. Students deepen their understandings of the physical sciences and history, through which they are encouraged to consider the needs of the world today, and what their own place might be in the unfolding of the future.

Using their increasing capabilities, Upper Elementary students reach out to the society around them. Students use the internet to explore information, write business letters, use the telephone to create contacts, and take trips outside of the classroom to broaden their experience. Service learning opportunities, such as organizing a food drive, help the children to deepen their understanding of the needs of others, while offering hands-on experience in working to meet those needs.

Taken together, these experiences combine to bring Upper Elementary students to a point of readiness for the challenges and opportunities of their upcoming middle school years.
