Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of frequently asked questions that will hopefully help you understand how FCM operates. All detailed information can be found in our Parent Handbook, which will be distributed and posted on our website soon. If you have any questions or concerns, please ask any FCM staff member.

What will my child need on the first day of school?

Parents will receive a welcome letter after enrolling that details the supplies needed for the classroom and for After School, if appropriate.

What time is drop-off?

  • Once the the front gate is unlocked, children may play in the Outdoor Learning Environment under the supervision of a parent or caregiver until 8:10 a.m., when carpool begins. For the first two weeks of school, as we establish routine and expectations in our new Outdoor Learning Environment, the area will not be available in the morning for play.
  • You may park and walk your child to the gate until 8:30 a.m.
  • The carpool lane opens at 8:10 a.m. At this time, a staff member will open the front gate.
  • Drop off ends at 8:30 a.m. A staff member will close the gate at 8:30 a.m. to
  • indicate that drop-off time is over. If you arrive after the gate is closed, you must walk with your child to the office to pick up a late pass and sign in. You must accompany your child to his or her classroom from the office if he or she is in Toddler or Children’s House.

What time is pick-up?

  • Toddler House: 11:50 a.m.
  • Children’s House (non-Extended Day): 12 p.m.
  • Extended Day and After School (if not in After School Late Day): 3 p.m.
  • Carpool Care (Extended Day or After School 12-3 student with a sibling in
    Elementary): 3:30 p.m.
  • Lower and Upper Elementary: 3:30 p.m.
  • After School Late Day: between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. (parent/caregiver must sign child out from After School)

What is the procedure for the carpool lane?

  • Cars should pull up as far as possible, with the first car pulling up to the parking space next to the toddler gate. A staff member will guide you.
  • Please stay in your car.

  • A staff member will open the passenger side door and greet your Toddler or Children’s House child. If you have only elementary students, they may exit the car on their own. For the safety of our younger students, siblings or carpool companions who are in TH or CH may not join older siblings in exiting the car without the help of a staff member. Please do not drop off your TH or CH child unless a staff member is there to receive him or her.
  • Upper Elementary students are available to escort young children to their classrooms.

At pick-up, do we use the carpool lane?

  • Yes, for 12 p.m., 3 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. dismissals.
  • Children staying past 3:30 p.m. in After School Late Day must be picked up in the After School classroom.

When is a child considered late for school?

  • Drop off ends at 8:30 a.m. and the gate is closed at that time. If you arrive and the front gate is closed, you are considered late. Please escort your child to the office and ask for a late pass. After signing in and picking up a pass, please walk your TH and/or CH child to his classroom to ensure your child is received by the classroom teacher. This procedure is for the safety of all children. Elementary children may walk to their classes independently.

When is the office open?

8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (summer hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

What do I do when I am on campus to volunteer/visit outside of drop-off and pick-up times?

All visitors to campus (including parents) must sign in at the front office and receive a visitor badge.

What happens if my child is involved in an accident?

We will call 911 if necessary and then contact you immediately. Prior to your child’s first day of school, we ask you to complete an Emergency Contact Form with up-to-date contact and authorized pick-up information. Please be sure to keep us updated when your information changes so that we can reach you in the event of an illness or emergency.

What items are encouraged in school lunches?

  • Nutritious, healthy items such as fruits, vegetables, yogurts, and sandwiches are appropriate.
  • Utensils for lunch are provided in the classrooms.
  • Lunch items should be packed in reusable containers that are easy for children to open successfully. “Gogurts” are not a good idea as they are difficult for young children to open gracefully and will be sent back unopened.

Is there a dress code?

There is not, but we ask that all children be dressed in comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and take off and that is not a hindrance to their quest for independent functioning. For young children, belts, suspenders, and such will make it difficult for your child to make it to the bathroom “on time”. Please be aware that all children enjoy playing outside and they may come home with dirty clothes. If you have clothes you do not want soiled, please do not let your child wear them to school.

What happens if my child needs to change clothes at school?

In LE and UE, we have a few sets of clothing students can borrow if they need to change for any reason. All Toddler House and Children’s House students have a change of clothes in their classrooms. Please label each piece of clothing clearly with first name and initial of the last name.

A child must be fever-, diarrhea-, and/or vomiting-free for how long before they can return to school?

Please review our medical information in the Parent Handbook when it is distributed. It is very important for you to be familiar with these policies and procedures.  Children must be fever-, diarrhea-, and vomiting-free for 24 hours, without medication. In the case of a cold, we ask that you assess the condition of your child: how much energy does he or she have? Will he or she be able to function in a group setting? What color is the discharge? Children should not be sent to school if they cannot participate in Physical Education classes or if you ask that he or she does not go outside for recess.

Is FCM allowed to administer prescription medication?

We can dispense prescription medication if it is in its original container, with the pharmacy label on it and with your written authorization. Medications should be brought into the office where they will be kept in a locked medicine box. Only Epi-pens and rescue inhalers are kept in the classrooms. Please make sure that the Epi-pen is clearly labeled with your child’s name and that it has not expired.

What do all children wear on school field trips?

Children wear the school’s purple FCM shirt, which is distributed at the beginning of the year.

How do I know if school is closed due to inclement weather?

  • Subscribe to our emergency communication service at www.rainedout.net.
  • Call the school. There will be a dated, recorded message on the school’s phone (919-755-1150). This message is recorded first, so it is always the most current information.
  • Check our website.
  • Check WRAL.
  • Check your email.

What are the minimum ages for children to be enrolled in Toddler House and After School?

14 months (and walking)

If I have a problem with how my classroom is operating, to whom do I go?
