Children, the Three Year Cycle, and the Curriculum
The Children's House, Lower Elementary, and Upper Elementary classes all run in three year cycles (Follow the Child Montessori also offers a Toddler House for children 18 months through three years). In Children's House, Lower and Upper Elementary, concepts are presented to children during the three years they spend in any one classroom environment. Holding true to the observations and practices of Dr. Maria Montessori, students at Follow the Child Montessori School are encouraged to work through the curriculum at a pace which is appropriate to each individual. Some students may master portions of the curriculum while continuing to practice skills in other areas. Other students, however, may master all of these concepts in a three year cycle. These students would then be offered lessons which continue to challenge their growing capabilities. Children at Follow the Child also benefit from programs outside the classrooms. These include a Fine Arts program, music instruction, physical education, and Spanish. These programs are available to children in Children's House through Upper Elementary. Toddlers participate in music and art activities. Fine Arts The Fine Arts program at Follow the Child begins with the extended day child, typically age five or six. Children under age five are content with the classroom environment as being an all-encompassing world; the need for specialization in visual arts has not yet arisen. At this early stage, the philosophy of art educators is that children should create freely, without specific instructions. As the extended day child prepares to move up to elementary, it is appropriate for him to have an awareness of the art studio, and to experience a more directed course of study. The core philosophy of the Fine Arts curriculum is process rather than product based. The exploration and development of creative self-expression is more important than the finished product. This does not mean that the final work of art cannot be aesthetically pleasing; the end result is, in fact, more likely to be successful with the primary focus on the artistic process. Music Children's House and Elementary classes participate in the music program. Recorder and vocal practice, along with exploration with a variety of cultures and styles are the basis for the Elementary students. Physical Education The Physical Education program is designed to give students the skills, knowledge, and disposition to live a physically active lifestyle. Active youths experience a better quality of life. Participation in physical activity provides opportunities for us to develop and maintain a health-related level of fitness, find personal meaning and enjoyment in physical activity and express ourselves as unique individuals.
