N.C. among top states for women-owned businesses

North Carolina ranks eighth among states with the most women-owned businesses, according to the State of Women-Owned Businesses Report commissioned by American Express OPEN. The Tar Heel State has an estimated 256,400 women-owned firms that employ 264,200 workers and generate roughly $34.9 billion in revenue, the report shows.

American Express to pay $112.5M in federal settlement

Credit card firm American Express will have to shell out more than $112 million to resolve allegations that it participated in illegal practices. Federal regulators had alleged that the company charged unlawful late fees and misled customers on debt collection issues. The $112 million the company will pay includes $85 million that will go to customers and $27.5 million in penalties.
